Open Year Round ~ the Local Store for the Locavore
Our Farm Store features our own seasonal produce including baby lettuce, mesculin mix, arugula, spinach, Swiss chard and tatsoi which we begin harvesting from our greenhouses in early April along with basil. By June we are producing tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers and scallions in greenhouses. Field crops including broccoli, cabbage, bok-choy and Swiss chard are ready for harvest later in June. In July sweet corn starts ripening, closely followed by squashes, zucchini, tomatoes, cherry tomatoes, cucumbers, green beans, eggplant and cucumbers.
Favorites and Seasonal Variety
A specialty product of ours is heirloom tomatoes. The seeds are older strains that are non-hybridized and have the best flavor ever! In the fall season, winter squashes, brussel sprouts and pumpkins ripen for harvest. We are currently researching and growing additional vegetables to add variety to our market, including asparagus and rhubarb for early spring 2012. Next year we’ll add yellow beans, kale and soy beans to the mix.
We supplement our own crops with other seasonal, locally grown fruits and vegetables including strawberries, blueberries, plums, nectarines, peaches, and many varieties of apples. If you’ve never had a Macoun apple, they ripen in September, and need to be enjoyed for as long as they last. There’s always more demand than supply. We also obtain locally grown garlic scapes, garlic, potatoes, onions, edamame, shallots among other fruits and vegetables. We carry local bedding plants and quality perennials in the spring and summer, pumpkins, gourds and corn stalks in the fall. Variety is always changing.
Not Just Veggies
Aside from seasonal produce, our store stocks many other interesting products. We carry locally produced milk, honey, maple syrup, bread, salsa, chips, pesto, goat’s cheese, fudge, tomato sauce, bruschetta and cocoa to name a few. We carry a great line of Grafton cheese, Otis Farm eggs and chicken pot pies, Nodine’s smoked meat and cheese products and of course, our own all natural grass-fed beef. And don’t forget dessert! … Tulmeadow farm-made ice cream in pints, quarts, pies, ice cream cookie sandwiches and ice cream dipped in chocolate on-a-stick.
We carry local-made and Pennsylvania Dutch jarred pickled products, pottery, Wild Republic stuffed animals and puzzles and lovely Bogo baskets from Ghana, hand made by farmer’s wives to supplement their incomes. Our specialty nuts in canning jars are favorites for hostess gifts and our old fashioned candies please the elders as well as the young ones who come to the store. A local couple makes cards, cutting boards, games, bibs and aprons for our store which make great gifts or even a special treat for yourself!
